| There are
many things to take into consideration when choosing a new dog.
Perhaps the most important question is to ask yourself why do
you want a dog? You may have children who are asking for a pet,
you may need a dog for protection and security, or maybe you had
a dog as a child and miss the companionship you received from
your dog. Whatever your reasons may be, dogs can certainly enhance
lives and bring families closer together. Be aware however, that
not every dog will be a match for your situation.
If you will be choosing a dog for your children,
consider a puppy. Puppies are quite sociable and can adapt easily
to most situations. There is nothing more satisfying than watching
your dog grow up alongside your children. You will also have
to decide upon a male or a female dog. Keep in mind that males
tend to be larger than the females and in some breeds the males
are more aggressive. The temperament of the dog you choose is
also a major consideration. In order to get a general idea of
the temperament of the dog you are considering, pick the dog
up and tip him on his back if the size of the dog allows. A
mild tempered dog will lie there calmly while a dog that struggles
to get free will require more patience and training. You can
also clap your hands loudly and make sudden movements. A high-strung
dog will be startled or run away, while a more mild-mannered
dog will look at you curiously as if he/she is wondering what
you are doing.
Make a point to do some research on the breed
of the dog you are considering. Different breeds require varying
levels of care and training. Depending on the breed you choose,
the dog may need a special climate, frequent or rigorous exercise,
and different grooming techniques. Dogs with thick, luxurious
coats will need more frequent grooming, which can be very expensive.
Selecting a new dog may seem like an easy decision but in reality
there are many things to remember before you make your final
choice. If you are planning to purchase a dog from a pet store
or a breeder, make certain that the person or organization you
are dealing with is professional and dedicated to quality and
the safety of the dogs that they sell. There are stores and
breeders who truly care about the welfare of the animals they
sell, while others are in business only for the money and may
operate at a lower standard than is acceptable.
A dog can be a wonderful addition to your life
and the fulfillment you will receive is priceless. Make sure
you understand the needs of the breed you choose and that the
temperament of the dog is a match for your family and your lifestyle. |
